What is Health Care Mediation?
Mediation is a facilitated dialogue process that allows parties in conflict to work together towards a resolution. It empowers people and gives them a voice so that the solutions are meaningful and sustainable. There are a variety of applications for mediation in health care, ranging from disputes caused by a stressful work environment to medical malpractice lawsuits.
Skillful mediators help parties think and communicate more clearly. They help people act with greater clarity and purpose. Nowhere is this of greater value than in the health care environment, which is fraught with conflict, charged with emotion, and where the stakes are invariably high in every dimension—financially, emotionally, and physically.
Who Should Attend?
This program is geared towards health professionals interested in career enhancement or those wishing to explore health care mediation.
- The skills necessary not only to mediate conflicts between a variety of parties within health care, but to support the one-to-one dialogue process related to patient advocacy
- Practitioner focus: The program is offered in collaboration with the Westchester Mediation Center, which operates under the auspices of the Unified Court System, Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Court Improvement Programs
- Sanctioned training: This training has been designed in accordance with the curriculum guidelines established by the Unified Court System Office of Alternative Dispute Resolution and Court Improvement Programs, which governs Community Dispute Resolution Centers Statewide.
- Certified Mediator Option: Upon completion of the program, participants have the option of enrolling in an apprenticeship program to become a local certified mediator.
