Bachelor Degree for Adults Program Details

How to Apply

Application to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts Program for Adults begins with a personal interview to discuss your objectives in returning to school. We use the interview to help you plan to meet the challenges you will face and to talk about the resources available to help you succeed. We can discuss financing as well and answer questions that will help you decide whether Sarah Lawrence offers what you seek as you pursue your higher education. To schedule an interview, please call us at (914) 395-2205 or e-mail us at

The written application for the Bachelor of Arts Program for Adults includes three essay questions, which are designed both to help us get to know you and to help you begin to define your goals and interests in higher education. No SAT results are required to apply to the Center.

Transfer Credit and Credit for Learning Acquired Outside the Classroom

With the approval of the Registrar, applicants to the Center may transfer up to 75 liberal arts credits earned in courses in which a grade of C or better was received. Of these, the College may accept up to 20 credits for “academic-like” work done outside an accredited institution.

Each semester-long class at Sarah Lawrence earns five credits, and students at the Center pay the same per-credit rate as do undergraduates in the College with one exception: summer courses are discounted by 25%.

Financial Aid

Generous alumnae/i and friends of the College enable us to offer scholarships to students who demonstrate need. The College’s financial aid program also helps students obtain grants and loans to pay school-related expenses that are not covered by scholarship funds.

Matriculation in the College

After successfully completing between one and four courses at the Center, students meet with their dons to discuss academic plans and to consider whether they are ready for matriculation into a degree program. Students then choose a campus don (although they always remain members of the "Class of CCE") and they become eligible to choose from among all the offerings in the Sarah Lawrence undergraduate catalog.

Degree Requirements

Sarah Lawrence awards a B.A. degree in liberal arts after the completion of 120 credits distributed among at least three of the four academic divisions: humanities, creative arts, history and social sciences, and mathematics and natural sciences. Matriculants must earn at least 20 non-fieldwork credits on campus.

Facilities and Services

Students in the B.A. Program for Adults have at their disposal all the facilities and services available to Sarah Lawrence students. These include the Campbell Sports Center, whose features include a swimming pool, squash and basketball courts, indoor track and exercise room, as well as lockers for day students. Other resources include the 300,000-volume Esther Raushenbush Library, and the Academic Computing Center, which offers virtually round-the-clock help and short courses in basic software and Internet access. Adult students also sometimes take advantage of the College's international programs, studying for a semester or a year in London, Florence, Paris, or Oxford. The Career Counseling Center helps students find off-campus internship and fieldwork opportunities that may aid them in identifying options for future study or employment.
