Soul Star on the Rise

Maiysha KaiMaiysha Simpson
'97
filmed the music video
for her new progressive soul single at the Heimbold Visual Arts Center in July. It was an SLC family affair -- the video was directed by film faculty member Damani Baker '96 and staffed by several alumnae/i. The album, This Much is True: was released on August 26. Check out the "making-of" slideshow or watch the video on www.maiysha.com.

SLC and Rankings

The College has been mentioned in several news and opinion pieces surrounding both the annual rankings released by U.S. News and World Report and a new rankings effort by Forbes magazine. Among the stories was one in Inside Higher Education. Sarah Lawrence was for a second year listed in an "unranked" category in U.S. News, although a feature story, based on a poll of high school guidance counselors, includes SLC in a separate ranking. See a related Sarah Lawrence statement on rankings on the admission Web site.

SLC in the News

A $1 million gift to the College for faculty support through the endowment and to strengthen the College's science program resulted in a feature in the Journal News. The gift was made by SLC alumna and trustee Olivia Churchill (Vicki) Ford and Silas Ford of Bronxville. The paper also ran an editorial about the gift in its August 14 edition.

Nicolaus Mills, literature faculty, discusses why the Millenial generation may not deserve its reputation as "The Dumbest Generation." His op-ed appeared in Newsday.

Victoria Hofmo '81 discusses her Scandinavian background and the museum she founded -- the Scandinavian East Coast Museum -- with The New York Times.

Graduate Writing Program faculty member Barbara Probst Solomon has been awarded the 25th Francisco Cerecedo Prize by the Association of European Journalists in Spain. She is the first North American to receive the prestigious award, as reported in The New York Times.

Remember the thrill of saying goodbye to your parents, saying hello to your new roommates, picking classes and trying to find your way around Bates? The Class of 2012 is doing that right now. Luckily, there's a whole community of people to support them. Meet the Orientation Leaders and see if you could beat them at Jeopardy.
