Halloween
The
calendar and the candy aisle of the drugstore are in agreement:
Halloween is right around the corner. What are you doing
to celebrate? Tell us your best costume idea, post photos
of your costume (or your kids’), and get ideas for dressing
up on the One Mead Way Halloween
page.

Reunion

not as far away as you might think. Now’s your chance to
get involved—you can suggest a seminar topic or volunteer

message boards.
SLC
Presidents Quiz
In our last issue, we offered Amazon gift certificates to three people
who got all the correct answers to our presidential trivia quiz. Apparently
our trivia was a little too… trivial, because none of our readers
earned a perfect score. No matter. We drew names from the pool
of everyone who participated and awarded prizes to Laura Matthew-Thompson ’76, Gillian
Culff ’88, and Samantha Hinds ’06.
(See? Participation counts!) Maybe next time we’ll do an essay question
instead…

Associates
Party

The
Fund for Sarah Lawrence Associates party took place on September
24 at the home of trustee Ellen Flamm ’59,
celebrating the generosity of donors who gave $1,000 or more to the
Fund for Sarah Lawrence in 2006-07. This year also marked the start
of a new tradition—recognizing donors who have given to the
Fund for five or more consecutive years at any level.
In
addition to standard party activities, writing faculty member Carolyn
Ferrell ’84 read her funny and heartbreaking essay, "Endless Summer
Job," which was published in the New York Times magazine in August.

It’s
October, and change is in the air. Though it was 85 degrees last weekend in
Bronxville, the weather is finally cooling off. Sweaters and boots are coming
out of hiding. And at Sarah Lawrence, we officially have a new president. Things
are looking good.
SLC
Celebrates Inauguration
Last Friday, under the tent on Westlands Lawn, Karen
Lawrence was inaugurated
as the tenth president of Sarah Lawrence College.
Delegates
representing 83 colleges and universities joined approximately
700 members of the College and surrounding communities, as well as
other friends, to celebrate the occasion.
The
festivities kicked off Thursday evening, with a musical welcome
to President Lawrence performed by music faculty, students, and
guests.
In
addition to the ceremony itself, Friday’s events included
a “New York street fair” style luncheon, a symposium
on the role of liberal arts education in today’s
fractious world (presenters included two SLC alums and two other
college presidents), and a formal dance featuring Sharon Jones
and the Dap Kings.
Visit
the Inauguration
Web site to read more about the events,
download video and audio clips, and read Lawrence’s
speech. Check back next week for even more coverage.
Inaugural
Year Events
The
fun of inauguration didn’t end when the band left Friday
night. The College will host a variety of events throughout
the academic year to keep the celebration going. The first
two are coming up this month:
