2009 Summer Institute
The Outside World, the Media, and the Classroom
July 13-17, 2009
The Empowering Teachers Summer Institute, sponsored by the Sarah Lawrence College Child Development Institute, is a rigorous (yet relaxed) professional development week consisting of panels and workshops conducted by leading professionals in the fields of education and child development. The evolution of supportive collegial dialogues and ongoing relationships is facilitated throughout the week by small group interaction and reflective exploration
The Empowering Teachers Summer Institute 2009 will include:
- A keynote address by Dr. Susan Linn, a psychologist, writer, award-winning producer, and puppeteer, who has written extensively about the effects of media and commercial marketing on children (open to the public)
- A roundtable conversation with the speaker just for the Empowering Teachers group
- Small working groups meeting throughout the week to share their reflections and practices
- A series of experiential workshops that are both stimulating and fun
- A field trip related to the theme
- Great food
- Colleagues from across the New York City Metropolitan area and beyond who work with students of varied ages
- Sarah Lawrence faculty and guest presenters
- A chance to reflect, experience, and collaborate in a relaxed environment on a beautiful campus
- After-school follow-up sessions through the 2009-2010 school year
- Participation for two years in an ongoing consideration of how to keep childhood alive at school and children meaningfully connected to the physical and social world and their imaginations in this era of standardization.
Fees
The cost for the program is $150 for each of the two years participants attend. Half of the fee ($75) is due with the application and is non-refundable if accepted. The balance is due upon arrival for the program. Schools, centers, other employers, and parent groups are often willing to pay for professional development programs, and may be able to cover this cost for you. If the fee is prohibitive for you and you are not able to obtain reimbursement, please speak with us.
