We consider you a first-year applicant if:
- You are still in high school at the time you apply,
- You have completed high school but have not yet started college, or,
- You have completed less than one year of full-time study (approximately 30 credits) at the college level.
We offer three different cycles in which you can apply to Sarah Lawrence College as a first-year applicant:
- Early Decision I: deadline November 1
- Early Decision II: deadline January 2
- Regular Decision: deadline January 15
You can only apply through one of these three cycles. If you are sure that Sarah Lawrence is your first choice for college, you should choose to apply through one of the binding Early Decision cycles. Early Decision applicants, a parent or guardian, and your school counselor must sign the Early Decision Agreement.
All first-year applicants must submit the following items to be considered for admission:
- The Common Application, which must be completed online and includes the additional Sarah Lawrence essay and a recommended analytical essay. The analytical paper should be graded by a teacher (including grade and comments) from your junior or senior in high school and must be between 3-5 pages. There is no separate writing supplement. All essays are contained within the Common Application.
- School report and transcripts, submitted online via the Common Application. Transcripts should be complete through seven semesters or the semester most recently completed. If you have transcripts from a summer school or college it is recommended those be submitted as well.
- Two Teacher/Faculty recommendations submitted online via the Common Application. These should be completed by teachers who know you well enough to write about you with specificity, and should be written by teachers of your core academic courses (English, math, science, history, or foreign language).
- Applicants for whom English is not their first language and who have not studied in an English language curriculum for the past two years should take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (Internet-based) is the minimum acceptable score.
- Early Decision applicants and their counselors must complete and sign the Early Decision Agreement and submit the form online with the Common Application by the application deadline.
Optional Supplements to your Application
- SAT I, SAT II, or ACT scores. The submission of standardized test scores is optional. You may choose to submit test scores if you feel they will strengthen and enhance your other application credentials. However, you will not be at a disadvantage should you choose not to submit your scores.
- Arts Supplement. If you selected “Yes, I would like submit an art supplement," the supplement will become available only after the successful submission of your Common Application; you will receive a link to Slide Room, where you may upload your materials.
- Interview. We offer interviews both on and off campus. These are entirely optional and if we are unable to accommodate an interview due to time constraints, it will not disadvantage your application. Learn more about admission interviews
