Club and Event Spaces

There are a variety of student spaces on the campus. Each space is advised by the Office of Student Affairs, and A*Space is co-advised by the art department. Each area has criteria for reserving the space for student programming. Contact Student Affairs for more information.

Student-Managed Spaces

A*Space (Bates)
A*Space was created by a group of students who saw the need for additional art performance space on campus. There is something happening in A*Space on almost any given night, whether it’s a showing of student artwork or a student performance piece. Students can receive funding for A*Space shows from the Undergraduate Student Senate.

The Black Squirrel (Bates)
The Black Squirrel is a student lounge space with a big-screen TV, comfortable seating, and a variety of games and activities, including pool, dart boards, chess boards, and other board games. It also features grab-and-go food as well as other amenities that entice students to just kick back and relax. The space can also be reserved for smaller student performances. All proceeds benefit the Students for Students Scholarship Fund.

Common Ground (Bates)
Common Ground’s mission is to serve students of color and student of color identity groups, as well as to engage the Sarah Lawrence community in discussions about the perceptions, realities, and consequences of racial and ethnic identity in our society and in the world at large. The space serves as a meeting room, event space, lounge area, and resource center for students of color and members of APICAD, Harambee, Unidad, and any other student of color identity group. While Common Ground primarily works with student of color identity groups, it also hosts events with other student organizations, faculty, and administrative officers committed to campus dialogue surrounding issues of multiculturalism and racial and ethnic diversity. Common Ground programming includes speakers, performances, discussions, movie nights, conferences, workshops, and other activities.

Publication Space (Bates)
The student Publication Space provides computers, printers, and other amenities for the writers and editors of SLC’s numerous student publications, including The Phoenix and SLC literary journals. For use of this space, please contact the Publication Space manager through the Office of Student Activities, (914) 395-2575.

Spiritual Space (Bates)
The Spiritual Space works to nourish spirituality in all of us by providing an intimate atmosphere, a sense of the holy, and a refuge for contemplation, both individually and collectively. This carefully designed space is minimally furnished, enabling visitors to engage freely in personal introspection, meditation, and prayer. It is can also be reserved as a meeting place for religious groups or spiritually based events. Housing a religious/spiritual library and items used in religious practice, the inclusive space allows many accesses to spirituality, while also serving as a canvas for all practices and traditions.

Teahaus (North Lawn)
The Teahaus is a small stone building in the center of campus that provides a quiet space for reading, reflection, and conversation. This student-run space offers light refreshments and a wide range of international teas. All profits benefit the students for Students Scholarship Fund. The Teahaus is open during the day and sometimes hosts poetry readings, study groups, and open mic nights.

WSLC Student Radio Station
SLC’s student-run radio station, WSLC, is located on the ground floor of Robinson. Featuring a number of student DJs, each with a unique style, WSLC presents a variety of student-selected programs and music. The station broadcasts via the Internet. Other Student Spaces

The Blue Room (Bates)
The Blue Room is available for open campus events and is a popular place for students to host concerts, dances, and small theatre performances. The space includes built-in sound and lights. Amplified sound is permitted in the Blue Room until 2 a.m. Priority in scheduling is given to SLAC. All events in the Blue Room must be registered with the Office of Student Affairs.

The Basement (Bates)
The Basement is available for both public and private student events. All events in the Basement must be registered with the Office of Student Affairs. Amplified sound is permitted in the Basement Sunday through Thursday until 1 a.m. and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m. The walls of the Basement are considered free expression space and can be repainted by anyone in the community. The space has open hours for free expression Sunday through Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Club Space (Bates)
The Club Space is a large area for club members to work on activities, providing supplies ranging from a copy machine to a button maker, in addition to a number of computers. Located within the Club Space is a meeting room available to all clubs, as well as the Student Senate office and mailboxes for all active student clubs. Storage for files and equipment is also available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Slonim House
As well as housing classrooms, the Graduate Studies offices, a copy machine, and a payphone, Slonim House has a living room and kitchen that serve as comfortable social gathering places for graduate students and faculty. In both the kitchen and lobby, bulletin boards are frequently used to post messages between administration and students, and students have their own posting boards in the upstairs kitchen. Students gather in the large Slonim House living room to study, attend poetry readings, hold meetings for student-run organizations, have celebrations, attend informal presentations, lounge on the couches to read, or sit at the tables to do homework. The living room is available to graduate students during regular Slonim House hours.
