Orientation 2007
Welcome to Sarah Lawrence! You are no doubt both excited and nervous about the years that lay ahead. As you likely anticipate, many aspects of your life will be very different as a college student. You won't be taking any more tests (for the most part), and you will no longer experience the benefits—and restrictions—of living with parents. With the prospect of these changes in mind, most of you are probably overwhelmed by a dizzying mixture of eagerness and uncertainty. Don't worry, we plan to make this transition as easy and enjoyable as possible, starting with Orientation Week.
The theme for this year's orientation is "Magic," and it is reflected (to varying degrees) in the dances, movies, and other events taking place during the week before classes. The theme we chose is not meant to transport you back to childhood when Disney movies and magicians wowed and amazed. Instead, this theme echoes the near-magical concept of taking four years to think, grow, learn, and inspire. Essentially, the week’s theme reflects something we love about Sarah Lawrence: the delightful improbability of a small haven for independent thought and creativity thriving in a world of increasing intellectual conformity. Enchanting, right?
Over the next four years, you will develop close relationships with brilliant and dedicated faculty, engage in constant dialogue with your equally eager and articulate peers, and be amazed by your own ability to be a force for change within our small community. Orientation week will provide a glimpse into the wonderful four years ahead of you. So take advantage of this week. Get to know everyone you can. Start the process of making the friends you will grow with and rely upon throughout your time here. Begin to think about what activities you'd like to play a role in over the next four years. But most importantly, enjoy! Enjoy this week as a precursor to your life at Sarah Lawrence, which for most is an enchanting experience that nurtures self-directed, thoughtful, hard-working individuals ready to leave their mark on the world.
Good luck!
