What is one thing every SLC student needs to do before they graduate?
Live in the New Dorms.
What is your favorite way to relax after class or during conference week?
Order food with the people on my hall and call family dinner time so we all debrief about how we all only seem to have five pages written.
Where is the best place to eat on campus and what do you usually order?
Any sort of sandwich from the Health Food Bar is what I run off of. Mangaree makes the best sandwiches hands down.
If you could be any movie or tv character who would it be?
Are you kidding? The ability to fly, super human strength AND regeneration? Who wouldn’t want to be Superman?
If you were stranded on a deserted island, what is one thing you’d have to have with you?
Good company.

What made you choose SLC?
Like most people, I liked the small classes and opportunity for biweekly, one-on-one contact with teachers. My high school had a similar structure, and I knew that that kind of contact wasn’t something I could give up. I liked that at Sarah Lawrence, students learn by critically engaging with (often interdisciplinary) subjects, actively researching and writing instead of rote memorization. My experiences this first year have only confirmed how important these qualities really are.
What advice can you offer to the incoming class?
At the risk of resorting to cliches, I would say just be really open to people and ideas. As tempting as it is when you’re nervous in those first few weeks, don’t isolate yourself in a small group or with a few people from your hall. Also, go to the Club Fair. Check out everything…you never know what could interest you later on or where you might be influential on our very small campus. You’ll meet people, too.
What has been your favorite class/best academic experience so far?
For my first-year studies course in African history, I’m currently researching the role of the Peace Corps in Africa. I think this academic experience really highlights the benefits of our conference system: through a relatively specialized topic, I’m learning about theories of modernization and development, the influence of the Cold War on US foreign aid policy, and the challenges faced by newly independent nations in Africa at the time. Plus, I’m doing it more or less on my own (yeeeeaaahhh, conference!!!).
What is your favorite way to relax after class or during conference week?
During downtime, I vary between being super productive and healthy (going to the gym) and ridiculously self-indulgent (watching Sex and the City for hours on my laptop until my eyes hurt.)
Where is the best place to eat on campus and what do you usually order?
The Health Food Bar is a-freaking-mazing. Mangaree, who works there, is the closest thing I have to a mother here. It doesn’t matter what I order, because she always makes me get a piece of fruit.

What advice can you offer to the incoming class?
You do not need to know your major by the end of freshman year. As Bob Marley once said, “Every little ting is gonna be all right.”
What do you expect to be doing 10 years from now and how is SLC helping to prepare you for that?
I hope to be doing something productive with my life.
What is the ideal way to spend a Saturday on campus?
I would say going to the gym, then to Bates to hang out with some friends for a couple of hours (believe me, it’s inevitable), study, then go out to a music event in either the Basement or Blue Room.
What is the funniest thing that has happened to you at SLC?
The time my friend, Sarah, told me what is now my favorite joke, the muffin joke (see below).
What is your favorite joke (PG-13)?
So there were these two muffins in the oven cooking. And so this one muffin says to the other muffin, “Man, it’s really hot in here.” And then the second muffin says to the first muffin, “AAH! TALKING MUFFIN!”

What made you choose SLC?
The combination of a small, residential campus and the intensely personalized academic independence. I came for the engaging, individual approach to education and the universally distinguished writing program.
What is your dream Jeopardy Board?
Square Dance Calls, Things Dead People Said, and Gay Writers
Do you have any bad habits?
Sincerity.
What is your favorite joke (PG-13)?
This guy walks into a bar, and he sees his old friend, only his friend’s head is huge, about three times larger than a normal head, perfectly round, and bright, bright orange. So the guy says to his friend “Dude, what happened?” And his friend answers, “Well, I was walking along the beach and I found this lamp, so of course I rubbed it, and a genie came out. The genie told me I could have three wishes, and for my first wish I wished for infinite wealth, and the Genie was like, ‘Granted;’ and for my second wish, I wished for eternal life, and the Genie said, ‘Bam, done;’ and for my third wish (and I think this is where I went wrong) I wished for a big, round orange head.”

What made you choose SLC?
I went to a high school that was set up in a similar way. I was doing conference projects in high school. It seemed like a natural transition to come here.
What advice can you offer to the incoming class?
Stay warm.
What is one thing every SLC student needs to do before they graduate?
Spend a day sitting on the lawn pretending to do work.
Besides Orientation Crew, what else do you do on campus?
I was a senator (SSSF) and I help a theatre group on campus called Take Four Theater Project.
What has been your favorite class/best academic experience so far?
I am now taking my second class with Mary Morris, writer and teacher. She has changed the kind of writer I am and pushed me in ways I didn’t think possible. It's teachers like Mary that make me thankful for the personal time we are given with professors.
What is your favorite way to relax after class or during conference week?
Dance around my house with my roommates, read a good book, sit in the sun (when we have sun), go see plays.
Where is the best place to eat on campus and what do you usually order?
There is a good place to eat on campus?? I guess I would say the Health Food Bar but I personally like to order from Haiku—great sushi!
